The Illinois Trekkers invite walkers to a Traditional Walk event at the Cahokia Mounds. Cahokia Mounds is a State Historic Site, a National Historic Landmark & World Heritage Site. Cahokia Mounds is the largest prehistoric site north of Mexico. Walk where the Mississippian Indians first settled in AD 700. The mounds were built of earth transported in baskets on peoples’ backs to elevate ceremonial buildings & residences of the elite, & to provide burial sites. The walk path passes Indian cultural areas & travels through several habitats on grass, concrete & gravel.
Monks Mound is the largest earthen mound in North America & is the equivalent to a 10 story building. Walkers can climb 154 steps to the top of Monks Mound.
